Blog Update – Testing Changes at MarketingWithRick.com

blogging tips

Things are a changing here are MarketingWithRick.com.

Actually I am testing out some new plugins and testing a new pop-up lightbox opt-in form from aWeber.

The plugins I am testing relate to staying in touch with any person that leaves a comment on the blog as well as providing a more user friendly comment area.

The plugins I have installed and testing are:

Edit Comments XT- This plugin allows users to edit their comments for a limited number of minutes after posting.  I have the plugin set and the default of 30 minutes.  After you leave a comment, you will notice that right below your comment there is a new line that shows the time and date of your comment plus the option to edit the comment and the time remaining to edit your comment.  This plugin did require some coding changes to the Comments.php file.  All the necessary information is at the plugin site.  It took my about 5 minutes to change the code.

I installed this plugin because there are time when I have left a comment, submitted the comment and then realized that I either made a typo and totally botched a sentence.

Should We Remove the Dates From Our Blogs Posts?

time stamp on blog

The other day I was blog hopping and commenting on other blogs and noticed something that I had not paid much attention to before.

I noticed that quite a few bloggers did not have the date displayed next to their blog posts.  I decided to do some research and found that approximately 30% of the blogs I visited did not have the dates displayed on their blog posts.  At first I found this kind of strange so I decided to research the reasons bloggers may want to remove the date from their blog posts.

The theory behind this idea is to focus on timeless content.  That is content that will be useful tomorrow, next week, next month, and maybe even next year.

My question then became, should I remove the date from my blog posts?

There are many top blogs on the Internet that Do Not have the date on their blog posts:

Blogging Tips – Oops! I Messed Up, Now What?

blogging tipYes, I admit it, I have messed up on my blog.

I recently ran into a couple of problems that really messed up my blog.

I recently tried a couple of new plugins that I thought were pretty cool.  However, after installing these I noticed they created some issues on my blog.

The first plugin that was a problem for me was the MyLiveSignature plugin.  I created my signature at their website and installed the   have my signature posted at the end of each blog post.  The problem I found after installing the plugin was that I received and error message while creating a new post and then I realized that after I published the post, it actually double the post.  I don’t know about you but this really bother me.  It looked terrible, not professional at all, not to mention it was basically written twice.

So I deactivated the plugin and everything was back to normal.  I have since went ahead and deleted the plugin.  I am now trying to figure out how to add the html code directly to the theme so it shows up automatically without the plugin.  It is possible that my WordPress theme had an issue with this plugin and that I will work okay with yours.  You will just have to test it a see how it works.

WordPress Plugins – Which ones do I use

I have received several emails asking which plugins I use on this blog, so I thought I would create a post for other that may be interested.

Plugins I Currently Use

Akismet – This plugin checks any comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not.  This plugin comes pre-installed on

WordPress Traffic Getting SEO Plugin 2.0 – This is a free plugin offer by Internet Marketer Jeff Johnson.  Version 2.0  includes new “total control” features that allow you to pick and choose which features of the WordPress plugins you’d like to keep, and which ones you don’t.  There is also a paid, pro version of this plugin that is supposed to be even more robust.

All in One SEO Pack – This plugin is streamlined for some best practices for WordPress SEO.  This plugin allows to to change the post title, post description and keywords so it is SEO optimized.  There is another plugin I am going to try that is called the Platinum SEO plugin that has more features than the All in One SEO Pack.
