Twitter Has A New Feature
Have you noticed the newest feature on Twitter?
It’s called the ”Suggestions for You” feature.
When I was on Twitter this past Saturday I noticed something new when I followed another Twitter user. After I followed someone I noticed that below the Follow button a list of 3 suggested Twitter users displayed along with the message “Since you just followed [user name], you might also want to follow:”.
After some research I found that the new “Suggestions for You” feature is based on algorithms built by Twitters user relevance team. The suggestions are based on several factors, with the most notable factor being the people you follow and the people they follow. You can also hide this feature if you wish not to use it.
Basically, suggestions are made of people for you to follow based on your own interest in the people you currently follow and the people they follow.
Twitter has also placed a “More Like” suggestion widget in the right sidebar of your Twitter page. This feature can also been seen on other profiles on Twitter. These recommendations are based on the tweets of the person who’s profile you may be viewing.
It looks like Twitter has taken a lesson from Facebook’s “Friend Suggestions” feature.
I am really excited about this feature as I think it will help expand my social sphere of influence. I also think this will help Twitter more relevant than it currently is.
Do you think this new feature will be useful to you? If so, how do you see yourself using it?

Hey Rick
I had not noticed the new feature to be honest, but it sounds great, recommended twitters or friends will certainly be a great help.
Would be cool so long as people don’t tamper with the algorithms and we end up getting hit with spammy twitter accounts, but then we could just hide it I guess.

@Sally Neill,
I have used the feature quite a bit the last couple of days.
I am sure that the algorithms will change over time and I am with you I hope it doesn’t get screwed up. Who knows where it will lead, maybe Twitter will start a PPC service with the option to be featured…I hope not. I really don’t think people will pay.

Hi Rick,
I’ll have to admit, I’ve overlooked this feature myself! I like sorting through the general searches. The #blog, #blogging, #wordpress areas of Twitter provide me with all the suggestions that I can handle.

@Jeffrey,
It’s a pretty cool feature. I have been trying it out to make sure that the people being recommended are ones that I would want to follow. So far, I would the majority of the recommendations have been good recommendations for me. It’s not the fatest way to follow a bunch of people but it is still a quick option.
I have used the hashtags to search before but I think you (not 100% sure) still have to click on the users picture to bring up the profile and then click to follow.
There are plenty of other options out there to follow other users with similar interests.

@Alex,
I have been doing a lot of research so I can start using Twitter more effectively and monetize it as well.
Things have been busy, you know how it gets sometimes. The kids are getting ready to go back to school next week.
I hope you are doing well.

Hi I have been using the bit ly “customise” feature when creating links with my own web page keywords with the hope that it aids searches.
Do you think I have found a good wheeze to get extra traffic?
Can other serach engines, bing, google, yahoo etc., find the word within the link, for example, my page on the wash care labels or laundry symbols at http://bit.ly/laundry_symbols is a high scoring page with most search engines.
Would this help other folk direct traffic to their sites or am I barking up the wrong tree?

@Brian Gable,
I have not used this feature from bit.ly yet…I’ve been kind of lazy.
My first question to you is, what do your stats tell you about your clicks? Are you getting more clicks since you started using keywords?
My second question is, can you use dashes or do you have to use the underscore?
I would think that it would be beneficial but I would have to do some research and some testing to see.
This feature would allow a reader to have a potential understanding of what the link is about, so it probably will not hurt.

@Dev – Technshare.com,
You’ve gotta check it out.
I am not saying that it is going to bring thousands of new followers to you but at least there is a chance of more exposure. Plus you can follow people of similar likings.
I see you have changed your avatar, cool.

Hi Rick,
This is cool, I hadn’t noticed it, but then it could be that I haven’t logged in in awhile! This reminds me of a similar feature on Facebook where it suggests other people for you to be friends with. This is good to have on Twitter too so you add more followers.

Hi Rick,
This something that I had not noticed on Twitter.
It sounds like a good idea, as Sally pointed out you could get hit with spam accounts.
I need to use Twitter and Facebook more.
Leaving money on the table so to speak.

@Pete Carr,
Spamming is always a concern. If I start seeing only promotions from a person I just unfollow them.
Using Twitter and Facebook can be time consuming but you can automate them both. At the same time you have to be careful with how much automation you use.
Good luck!

I really love this new feature.. It also shows you “which” of your friends is following that suggestions… Helps to make a connection and puts you at easy…
For Sally, if they use it for spam you can use tweepi to filter those tweeples out..
Nice article..
