How Often Do You Update Your Blog?
How often should you be posting new blog content?
This has been a hotly debated topic for many years. Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer.
I know, not what you wanted to hear. So lets take a look at ideas to help you determine how often you should be blogging.
- Determine Your Blog Goals Then Choose Your Blog Posting Frequency
- High Blog Posting Frequency Can Attract New Visitors
- High Blog Posting Frequency Can Help You Retain Repeat Visitors
Determine Your Blog Goals Then Choose Your Blog Posting Frequency
Once you decide to start a blog, you’ll need to determine what your goals are for your blog. Depending on your goals, you’ll need to put some thought into your blog posting frequency.
If you want visitors to come to your blog every day, then you are going to want to post something on your blog at least once per day.
If you want visitors to check back every once in a while, then posting once or twice per week is probably enough.
You may be thinking, how am I going to post that many times each week. Nobody said blogging was easy. Especially if you want to be successful.
High Blog Posting Frequency Can Attract New Visitors
Not only do new blog posts give people a reason to return to your blog, but they also help your blog in terms of search engine optimization. Think of it this way, each new blog post is a new entry point for people to find your blog through search engines. The more entry points you have, the more chances you have that new readers will find your blog.
High Blog Posting Frequency Can Help You Retain Repeat Visitors
Frequent posting helps to attract more visits from people who like your blog and decide to subscribe to your RSS feed. Each time you publish new content on your blog, your subscribers will either see that post in their feed readers or they’ll receive emails directing them to your blog to read the new posts. So every time you publish new content you increase the opportunities for increased traffic.
In the blogging community, a commonly used phrase is, “content is king.” That means that the most important part of your blog is the content you publish through your blog postings. Only you can determine your blog posting frequency. And your blog posting frequency depends on the goals of your blog.

You also have to keep in mind that you need to maintain quality in your posts, even if you are posting everyday. If you’re just pumping out average posts daily, your blog won’t be as beneficial to readers than if you were posting 4 content-rich posts of the utmost quality every week.
Look at the blog ViperChill, for example. Glen, the author, only posts maybe once or twice a week, but his posts generally are lengthy (2,000+ words), very content-rich, and amazingly well written. In fact, he was able to grow his blog to over 6k subscribers in a year because of how well written his posts are.
Personally, I aim for 3-4 blog posts a week. Any more than 5 a week and I quickly crash and burn. My posts also tend to be long (1,000+ words usually), so it takes me several hours to publish one blog entry. I also like to divide up my days, so that I would write 50% of a post one day and the other 50% when the post is scheduled to be published.
It really depends on your preference. There’s no right or wrong answer when deciding post frequency. However, if you’re posting less than once a week, you might have to reassess whether blogging is anything more than a hobby to you.
I’ve always found post frequency to be an interesting topic. This article definitely gets you thinking. Thanks for the great read.

@Christina Crowe ( @CashCampfire ),
You are so right about ensuring we create quality posts.
I love reading Glens posts over at ViperChill. I am relatively new to reader your blog and I have really enjoyed your writing.
I think consistency is the key. You need to be consistent with your posts so your readers will know how often they need to check back and find new posts on your blog.

It all depends on how you want to run your blog. There are some other successful bloggers who do not update their blogs frequently but then they still get a lot of traffic. This does not mean that you should neglect your blog but just that you should update it in ways that are sufficient.
